Badger Brands’ Thermal Clothing is tested and certified to the European Standards EN342:2017 – Protective Clothing – Ensembles and garments for protection against cold. This ensures you have the peace of mind that the garments your staff are wearing are suitable and safe whilst they work in cold environments. You can have confidence they will be protected, comfortable and productive when you kit them out with Badger chiller & freezer wear.
EN342:2017 Standards Explained
The EN342 rating of a freezer garment is determined by 4 parameters or tests. The outcome of these tests is displayed in the annotations below the pictogram for a garment (marked a, b, c & d below). The ratings for Badger’s garments can be found under the ‘Specifications & Certifications’ tab on the web page for that product.
(a) Thermal insulation properties with motion indicates the thermal insulating properties of the garment, measured as Icler (m².K/W). The higher the value, the better the insulating properties. An (A) after the rating indicates the garment was tested alone and a (B) indicates that the garment was tested as an ensemble (i.e. a freezer jacket and trouser were tested together).
(b) Thermal insulation properties without motion (optional)
This is an optional test which is measured the same as parameter a, but without any motion factored in.
(c) Air permeability (class 1-3) This indicates the breathability of a garment, with class 1 being the most breathable and class 3 being the least breathable. A high air permeability allows for the proper dry evaporative heat loss required to keep you warm and comfortable. If a garment is not breathable enough, you will sweat and get cold.
(d) Waterproof penetration properties (class 1-2)
This test determines the waterproofness of the garment. This is not generally a requirement for cold store garments as the work is inside, out of the elements.
Thermal Ratings of the Badger Range
Badger thermal workwear is tested as an ensemble (jacket and trouser combination). The ratings below show the recommended temperatures for each combination or ‘Light’ and ‘Medium’ activity levels. Driving a forklift would be considered ‘Light’ activity, walking and picking orders would be considered ‘Medium’.
