Pink Hi-Vis Is Now Compliant. Here’s What It Means.

For years, compliant hi-vis workwear in Australia came down to a short list of approved colours. Orange-red, red, yellow, and yellow-green were your options, and most worksites ran with that.

That changed with the release of AS/NZS 1906.4:2023. Pink and green are now officially recognised as compliant hi-vis colours under the updated Australian Standard.

Why the update matters

Hi-vis works on contrast and the principle behind it is simple. If a worker cannot be immediately distinguished from their surroundings, the garment is not doing its job. Orange performs well against dark surfaces like bitumen, but it does not deliver the same visual separation in every environment. Brighter backgrounds, certain lighting conditions, and high-density worksites all present different visibility challenges.

The inclusion of pink and green gives site managers a broader set of compliant options to work with, and for many operations, pink in particular fills a genuine gap.

A practical use for pink on site

One of the more immediate applications is visitor and contractor identification. When your permanent workforce is already dressed in orange or yellow, a visitor wearing compliant pink is visually distinct from the moment they step on site. There is no confusion near live plant, no reliance on lanyards or ID badges to signal induction status. It is visual management that works without asking anyone to think about it.

What to check before you order

Not all pink garments meet the current standard. Pink vests produced before June 2023 may predate the updated AS/NZS 1906.4:2023 requirements. Always check the label and confirm the garment is certified under the current standard before purchasing for site use

What we stock

Badger currently carries three options in compliant or pink-incorporated hi-vis.

The JB’s HiVis Zip D+N Safety Vest is the most straightforward choice for visitor and contractor management. It comes in compliant pink and meets AS/NZS 1906.4:2023 and AS/NZS 4602.1:2011 for both day and night use. The zip-front design makes it quick to put on and take off at site entry points, and the side utility pockets add practical storage without bulk. Available from 2XS to 6/7XL.

The JB’s HiVis Fluro Vest is a lightweight pull-over option in compliant pink, made from 100% polyester tricot with two side pockets secured by hook-pile tape. It is a straightforward daywear layer that sits easily over existing workwear. If you are kitting out a large visitor pool or a labour hire roster on a tight budget, this is a cost-effective way to get compliant pink on site from S to 5XL.

For women working in warm outdoor conditions, the JB’s Women’s HiVis S/S Polo is available in a Yellow/Pink colour option. Made from 160gsm micro-mesh polyester with JB’s Dri moisture-wicking technology and a UPF 50+ rating, it is a day-use polo designed for comfort during long shifts in the heat. The tailored fit, chest pocket with pen insert, and side splits are practical features that unisex cuts tend to compromise on. It meets AS/NZS 1906.4 and AS/NZS 4602.1 Day Only.

If you are reviewing your visitor management process, differentiating roles across a complex site, or fitting a growing team of women in trades, compliant pink hi-vis is now a practical option worth considering.
